The Retail Goddess Rides Again !

I was hired on the spot today  for a sales  job at a store that 's opening  on Nov 15th.
I go to orientation this weekend  and  then  I also  help  set up the merchandise next Monday.

job found

The money isn't spectacular , but it's more than I have ever made   and once I stay past  the next few weeks , it's upped.

I can also  start a 401 K.

I get to wear all my nice clothes and jewelry ( no vests  or  complexion dulling monkey suits )  , so that 's  an added benny.

In two  and a half days  I'll be further into my  forties ( Wednesday is my birthday) , but life is definitely  looking  more interesting again.

Job Hunt Phase 2

Still looking  for some retail work.
I have never had to keep putting in applications.
I was always hired without much hoopla, I've never had to look this hard.
I had an interview Wednesday and I felt good about it, but they chose someone else already  ( for two positions in the  store).

I thought I was a good fit for them -- it melded  my personal passion for healthy food and   supplements  with my years of  retail  experience .

Either  the interview didn't give them what they wanted ,or they found someone who was just plain better .

I'm dejected , and worried  that for some unknown reason I have become  unemployable .

Gratitude Attitude

Everyday that I wake up over the past  week , I am feeling gratitude like never before in my life .

The turning of the leaves is an exquisite ritual and something I had been craving
for several years  during our stint in  Houston.
Roses all year round were quite seductive , but the cool season was just way too short .

I yearned for changing seasons  with all that I had  after the second year there .

Last year on Oct 22 ,we were on our way from Natchitoches ,Lousiana  to York ,Alabama  where we proceeded
to have one of our less comfy nights  on the trip ( there were 2 more).

We needed to break free from my parents , the emotional toll kept  going up  and so we did something neither of us
thought we  would ever do -- walked away .

It's been a transitional year fraught with change , disappointment , fear , longing for stability ,small triumphs  and loneliness .
The natural beauty of this area  has  smoothed over  many a rough day.

Everywhere we look out of this rental home  the forest , the neighborhood and surrounding hills keeps filling in with more colored leaves .
When we first rented  this house last year , the leaves were long gone  and  the  large trees framing this property were elegantly bare .
Witnessing  their colors this  year  has been bittersweet , with the innate knowledge  that
their brilliance is  short lived  before  the advent of  yet another long ,hard  winter  .

Instead though ,I am focusing on the joy and peace these  intense colors  bring me  .

Let winter come whenever it wishes to ,for today I have not a care .

Raw Deal

More blood  testing reveals  more no-no foods for this allergy beleaguered family.
We now get  no cultured dairy ,no 'shrooms , smoked  or preserved meats, cider, alcohol, dried fruits,
foods  pickled or  in brine , no leftovers older than 24 hours.

It's a mold  found in these foods , or that  grows in these foods in time.

I'm actually almost too confused to know what I can actually safely eat now .
Mostly just extremely fresh, raw food I guess.

If we feel better  and our  immune system doesn't have to do so much overtime, then it will all be well worth it.
I always have a plugged nose , and Steff was constantly tired.

We took tests  to rule out stuff  ( anemia  etc) , and  these  blood tests revealed all these food allergies ,
and for me  environmental as well.
I'm like some over bred  dog !

Good grief.

Being a serious  foodie, this all really puts a crimp in my style.

We'll survive because we are sturdy , adaptable and  versatile lot.
Still this  is  a turn of events  none of us  could  have foreseen.
A lot more inconvenient than a few dust mites and animal hairs.

Surprises  are highly overrated.

The Last Ones Standing

Tuesday's marketing netted these  local berries .
I believe they are the last  of the season.
We bought 2 containers, ate the first one for dessert and the second ones were marked
for my family famous muffins the next morning..

I work mostly with spelt now due to my grain allergies  , a mixture of white and whole  flour so they don't sit in your tummy or the oven like a brick .Also you have to  add an extra tbl of  baking powder to get the lift.

These are made with  a nice amount of  local foods:

Raw milk from Greenfield
Eggs from Southampton ( hillbilly chickens running wild and free --hey --that 's what it says on the carton...)
Raspberries  from Westhampton

The flours, baking powders ,walnuts, raw sugar and canola oil come from all over the US  as far as I know.
I believe the  butter is from New Zealand.I have no clues as to the origin of cinnamon .

I am getting quite the rush from being a local hero  and supporting local businesses.

The Beginning

Autumn foliage  peeked around every corner  ,ancient mountains  visible  from  every  footstep
taken outside  looked  like a  "Sound of Music " double take .

Her  tall and handsome co-worker drove up  and opened the car door for  this young slip of a girl just shy of 18 who  had been crushing on him for weeks.

In a surprise twist  that had never happened in her life to date , the crush had  asked her out.

It was a Monday afternoon , they were both off and he had  suggested the local swimming pool for a  tet-a-tet .
Totally unsuccessful in finding a swimming suit  in her family's storage room  , she was forced to tell him  that  they'd have to find something else  to do  in this  quiet Alpine village .

They headed  to the middle of town  in his blue Ford with rock music blaring out the open window ,as she tightly gripped  a plastic bag that contained  a doll bought that afternoon.

Normally  she was long past collecting dolls , but this one  had spoken to her  at the shop across the  street from her  parent's apartment. She named her Ginger.

He parked and they walked for a bit, he was faster than her  and their paces didn't match as he was nearly a full foot taller with long , sure strides   .

She scrambled to keep up  while wearing  sleek  looking  strappy sandals  that made a great leg , but were quite useless on the pavement  and a disaster on cobblestone.

They found an outdoor cafe  attached to a fancy hotel  and sat down at a small bistro style wrought iron table  .

Beverages ordered  through an attentive waiter  behind  them,  the mating ritual  began.

Bad jokes, nervous laughter   and shy glances  punctuated the hours spent together .

The afternoon wound down to it's  end .

Only for the day , because over  the  next few weeks  love  showed up , and never left  again.
